Babywearing during pregnancy and with a newborn: a guide to wraps and carriers

Can I carry my baby from birth?

Yes. A KOKADI baby wrap can be used from birth. KOKADI baby carriers such as Flip, TaiTai and WrapStar are suitable from 3.5 kg, provided the model and size fit your baby. Their adjustable seat width supports the squat-spread position. Always follow the instructions for your particular carrier.

Which carrier can be used during pregnancy?

If you want to carry an older child during pregnancy, the KOKADI Onbu has no waist belt around your abdomen. It is a back carrier for children from late sitting age, not a newborn carrier. Ask your midwife or treating clinician whether carrying is suitable for your pregnancy.

What is ergonomic babywearing (the squat-spread position)?

In the squat-spread position, also called the M-position, the baby’s knees are raised above their bottom and the thighs are supported. The back retains its natural curve, with appropriate head and neck support. Fit the carrier carefully and follow its instructions. In KOKADI carriers, your baby should face towards you rather than outwards.

Can I carry after a caesarean section?

This depends on your recovery. Ask your midwife or treating clinician before using a carrier after a caesarean section. The carrier must fit your baby and should not press on your healing scar. The Onbu is not a newborn alternative: it is intended for children from late sitting age.

Can both parents use the same carrier?

Yes. KOKADI carriers can be adjusted for different wearers. KOKADI also offers extensions for chest straps, waist belts and shoulder straps. Check which accessories are compatible with your model.

Baby wrap, baby carrier or RingSling: what is the difference?

• Baby wrap: suitable from birth, with different ways to tie it for front, back or hip carrying, using jacquard-woven organic cotton.
• Baby carrier, such as Flip, TaiTai or WrapStar: buckles make it quick to put on, with an adjustable seat width and a minimum weight of 3.5 kg. Follow the model’s instructions.
• RingSling: a short wrap adjusted with rings, compact for outings and approximately 1.90 m long.
• Onbu: a back carrier without a waist belt, for children from late sitting age.
